artist statement

The flow of water is a beautiful thing. The way it moved and twisted with the waves always captivated me. The curvature and fluid motion water holds has a sense of calmness: These aspects make liquid have seemingly psychological properties. In my work, I combine illustration, figures, and flowing direction in order to depict these facets. Through the stylization, I emphasize the meditative feeling that comes from these forms. I find inspiration from artists such as Tara McPherson, who uses liquid gestures alongside illustration in her work. Due to the meditative, psychological properties the physical appearance that water holds, I decided to add in a spiritual aspect. I started using religious symbols in my work in order to recreate the feeling of prayer. Because water reflects a thoughtful, pensive state of mind, I felt prayer paralleled in these features. I think these parallels could be displayed visually through curvaceous motion.
